SORSOGON CITY -- Five policemen and three civilians were killed in an ambush staged by members of the New people's Army on Burias island, in Masbate province Friday morning.

Police officer Elena Anonuevo said the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. while a 10-man joint team of the Claveria Municipal Police Office and the 5th Regional Mobile Group were on their way to check the presence of armed men at the said place.

A police report said that upon reaching Poblacion village, in Claveria, San Jose, the group, on board a truck, was ambushed by around 50 NPA rebels positioned along the road.

Anonuevo said the rebels used a land mine during the attack.

According to my own investigation, the 3 civilians killed where asked by the driver of the truck that was used to bring the investigating "team" to the site, to accompany him on the trip. The driver, Glen Garcia, was seriously hurt during the incident and was rushed to Legaspi City for immediate treatment since the local district hospital of Claveria is ill-equipped to handle such case.

Also, what's so suspicious about the "attack" is that, the ex-mayor Eduardo Andueza, husband of the incumbent mayor, came out unhurt from the attack. It has been rumored before that Eduardo Andueza would fake these attacks, especially during his incumbency so he would have a reason to ask for police/military assistance from the regional command and would eventually turn these "escorts" into private armies.

Sayang!
